Supports AES
Encryption Algorithm
Secure Lock Ware uses the powerful AES encryption algorithm
for securing data, the same encryption standard used by the
US Government. |
Fully supported
on Buffalo storage products
Secure Lock Ware is device independent and will work with your
current buffalo storage devices. There is no hardware update
required. |
| Choose between complete drive
encryption or individual file and folder encryption to suit
your needs. |
| You may choose to encrypt your
complete storage media, which may be an external drive, for
example a Buffalo DriveStation or a Buffalo USB Flash. By encrypting
the device with Secure Lock Ware all data written to the device
thereafter is secure and impossible to access without inputting
the password you have set during the encryption process. |
| You may choose to encrypt a
single file or folder. This means that this file or folder can
not be accessed without inputting the password you have set
during the encryption process. This is useful if you do not
wish to encrypt every file, just those which contain confidential
data. There are various settings available with the Secure Lock
Ware; for example you may set the strength of encryption you
wish to use. When a file is encrypted the original file remains
as it is and an encrypted version of this file is saved to your
desktop, this is the default destination which may be changed
within the settings. One setup for example would be that every
time you encrypt a file on your PC, the encrypted version is
automatically saved to your USB flash allowing you to carry
your data safely. |

| Loss: Simply mislaying
your portable storage can leave sensitive data such as
personal information, customer lists and company strategy
accessible to anyone. |
| Drive Encryption:
By locking your device with AES encryption your sensitive
data cannot be accessed without a password. |
| Step
1 |
Using
Secure Lock Ware you can choose to encrypt your complete drive.
Backup all data on the device you are about to encrypt, to a
safe location on your PC for example (Drive encryption involves
drive format whereby all present stored data is lost.)
| Step 2 |
Encrypt your drive
using your free downloadable Secure Lock Ware tool. This will
involve creating a password which will lock the drive.
(download
user manual)
| Step 3 |
Format your drive.
| Result: Any files
saved to the drive or USB flash henceforth are automatically
encrypted. |
| Insecure: Stepping
away from your computer leaves your sensitive data vulnerable
to unauthorised access. |
| Lock your drive:
Re-enable your password protection on your encrypted device
at the click of a button before stepping away from your
computer. |
Once encrypted you
must insert a password to make your device accessible from your
PC. However you may want to restrict access without having to
disconnect your device each time. Therefore Buffalo has provided
a Lock and Unlock function within the Secure Lock Ware allowing
you to relock your device as you need to.
| Step
1 |
Select
Start / All Programs / Buffalo / Secure Lock Ware and then click
on Lock the Device.
| Step
1 |
Select Start - All
Programs - Buffalo - Secure Lock Ware and then click on Unlock
the device on this PC.
| Step 2 |
Enter your password
when prompted. |
| Theft: As well
as the inconvenience of having to replace your stolen
storage device, not knowing who may have access to your
sensitive data files causes unnecessary stress. |
| File/Folder Encryption:
By encrypting specific data files on your storage device
give yourself peace of mind. They may have stolen your
device, but without your password they cannot view these
encrypted files. |
Instead of encrypting
an entire device you may encrypt individual files and folders
to store within your device or on your PC.
| Step
1 |
Install
your free downloadable Secure Lock Ware tool. The file encryption
/ decryption tool shortcut will be installed on your desktop.
| Step 2 |
To encrypt a file
/ folder, open the Secure Lock Ware shortcut and simply drag
and drop the target file / folder to the SLW dialog (Refer to
user manual).
| Step 3 |
Enter, when prompted,
your password for accessing the encrypted data.
| Result
The file is encrypted and can only be accessed by entering a
password. |
| Step
1 |
To decrypt the previously
encrypted file / folder, open the Secure Lock Ware desktop shortcut
and simply drag and drop the target file / folder to the open
window (Refer to user manual).
| Step 2 |
Enter when prompted
your password to access your file / folder
| Result: The file
is decrypted and is now completely accessible just as if never
having being encrypted. |
| Insecure: Emails
pass along public servers as they travel along the internet
making them vulnerable to unwanted access. |
| Re-lock your drive:
Encrypting attachments with Secure Lock Ware will prevent
unauthorised users from opening them. Don・持・yロt綺吟rZclude the
password in the same email! |
Same
method as the previous solution. Once received by mail, the
attached file must be decrypted for viewing. In order to be
able to decrypt the file the recipient must have Secure Lock
Ware installed on their PC and they also must be informed by
the sender of the password which was set to the file when it
was encrypted. |

Have you ever thought about
the implications of your confidential data getting into the
wrong hands?
By encrypting your sensitive data you will never again have
to worry about anyone gaining unauthorised access.
We recommend using our free Secure Lock Ware software to password
encrypt your data, and as a result ensure complete data protection. |
| 1.Encrypt
entire drive |
2.Encrypt
a file/folder |
Secure
the entire contents of your drive media with drive
encryption. |
Secure
your files or folders instead of encrypting the
entire drive. |
| First encrypt your drive or
USB Flash using Secure Lock Ware (refer to manual for details).
Secondly you must format this storage device before you can
continue to use it. Your storage device is now encrypted; any
file or folder saved to it henceforth is automatically encrypted.
The encryption of the file / folder when saving is transparent
to the user as the Secure Lock Ware and storage device automatically
handles securing of the data. |
| AES stands for Advanced Encryption
Standard and is considered to be a next generation standardised
encryption algorithm. The AES system used in the Secure Lock
Ware software is the same as the encryption standard used by
the US government. Depending on the device Buffalo offers either
128-bit or 256-bit encryption. Brute force extraction of encrypted
data is virtually impossible with AES, thus giving peace of
mind with regard to data protection. |
* Installation and password
setup requires administrative access to your computer. Once
installed and the password has been set, then anyone can use
the software.
* When carrying out the Drive encryption / Decryption function
it is necessary to format the device before the process is complete,
thus wiping out all data stored on the drive. Please be sure
to backup all data on the drive or USB flash before encrypting
/ decrypting it.
* Drives encrypted using Secure Lock Ware will be recognised
as a locked drive even on a Windows PC where Secure Lock Ware
is not installed. However the contents of the drives will not
be accessible until Secure Lock Ware is installed.
* It is possible to format an encrypted device using Windows
even without Secure Lock Ware installed, meaning the device
will be re-usable but the encrypted data will be completely
deleted.
* Secure Lock Ware supports multiple encrypted devices connected
at any one time.
* If an encrypted drive is set as a shared drive, it can be
accessed over intranet connection as long as Secure Lock Ware
is installed on each client PC and the password is known by
all those authorized to access it. |
